Where's My Drink?

Copyright © 1997 Kelli Caldwell

ROUGH A CAPPELLA VERSION!

Texte alternatif

Tiny babies in their mothers’ wombs
Don’t have room to run away
Little children left alone at home
Don’t answer the phone when I’m gone
(But you’re gone all day—)

Chorus:
Let the Future be the Bank, they say
As they soak up the rays
Where’s my drink?
Where’s my drink?
I don’t think
We’ve got it right—

Little heartbeats, with their hopeful eyes
Say, Mommy, don’t cry, it’s okay
And their feet are racing to the door
Please, Daddy, don’t leave us anymore
(Thought you said you’d change)

Chorus:
Let the Future be the Bank
They say as they rake in the pay
Where’s my drink?
Where’s my drink?
I don’t think
We’ve got it right—

Let the Future be the Bank, we say
As we strip their hope away

Piece by piece
Can’t we see
It’s not free
They pay the price

Little children in the cold
They’ve got it better than some
Yet they say

Make me feel good, that’s the only way
To deaden the pain in my soul, in my heart
Where’s my start?
I needed you

Chorus:
Let the Future be the Bank, they say
And they turn the other way
Where’s our heart?
Where’s our soul?
I don’t know
We let it go

Lyric notes: I wrote this when I was doing some temp work at a day-treatment center for children with substance-abuse and behavioral issues. Part of my job at the time was typing in their records, so I couldn't help but read what I was typing. In every case that I read, the kids had survived such incredible abuse, I couldn't believe it. The song's not about abuse on that order, but prioritizing the welfare of children as a society and what I've perceived as short-sighted selfishness in a lot of areas, on the part of the baby boomer generation.
